As part of the Tier II Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for DC2RVA being prepared by DRPT and FRA there is a range of alternatives still being considered. A final decision on a preferred alternative will not be made until the EIS process is complete.
The Northern Virginia section DRPT is studying extends from the Long Bridge approach in Arlington to Spotsylvania, Virginia. This alternative includes adding a track in sections with only 2 tracks to form a continuous corridor of co-mingled 3-track rail. In addition there would be a 6 mile section of 4 tracks from Alexandria to Long Bridge. This alternative includes shifting track in curves where practical to gain greater speed, improving crossings, signals, safety systems, and accommodating VRE platform improvements.
Three options are being considered to align the DC2RVA corridor with the new Long Bridge options currently being studied by DDOT: adding 2-tracks to the east, adding 2 tracks to the west, or adding a single track on each side approaching Long Bridge. Improvements would occur within the existing right of way.
The study will assess the environmental impacts of potential rail improvements and identify ways to avoid, minimize, or otherwise mitigate any negative impacts. The EIS is intended to help decision makers understand the benefits and impacts of the project alternatives. A recommendation for a preferred alternative will be included as part of the EIS.
